“Coco McAtee, I thank the stars everyday that we had that conversation and I decided to have you come and talk with my Girl Scouts. That is one of the best things I think I ever did for those girls..."

Telling the Truth About Bodies

Young black man

April 28, 2015

In A Matter of Seconds
My white husband and white son were watching the news about the Baltimore police situation and a young black person. I heard husband trying to explain why the boy ran. My son is not getting it. “Why would he look them in the eye and then run?” My husband tries again. He tells my son the condition the boy was found in when brought out of the van. My son says there are bad people in this world.

I leave my house, drive a block and see two white children driving those mini automated cars on the sidewalk. Peacefully acting “big” and then I catch it. One is driving a police car. I think “would little black boys drive such a marked car?” “Do black neighborhoods have such expensive toys?” Black kids are more often taught to run from the police. That poor young  man did what you do in one’s neighborhood. Sad. It is sad.
